a festivus for the rest of us

Yesterday was fall festivities day at the Dixon house. Noah and I spent the afternoon making scarecrow cookies and delivering them to our neighbors. Then, after some tasty burritos for dinner, Noah and Duane skillfully carved our 3 pumpkins (Duane's much better and safer with large knives than I am). I even gave toasting the pumpkin seeds a shot, but they turned out to be pretty disgusting. Ah well. The day ended with the pumpkin lighting ceremony. Noah is at such a fun age for things like this. I'm trying to focus more on the boys rather than on the less significant things I have been focusing on recently. I think yesterday was a good start. I have such sweet boys. I want to do my best to soak up every day I have with them and give them the kind of mom they deserve. I know that it is only by the grace of God that I will manage to do either of those things, which makes me even more grateful to know that his grace is sufficient!

This weekend we visited a pumpkin patch with our friends David, Candice, Anna Kathryn, Isabelle, and Carrigan. The kids had fun with the cow train, hayride, and corn maze. Noah and Anna Kathryn have a long term relationship that we're pretty sure will end in marriage one day, but for now they're just friends. Courting you might say.

a bunch of monkeys

Today we had our first ever visit to the Nashville Zoo. Noah and Micah were excited to be able to spend the day with their cousins Andy, David, Micheal, and Ty. They were the craziest monkeys there!

Noah is not a huge animal person (he comes by that honest), so he was satisfied to take a quick glance at each animal and move on to what he considered to be more important stops. He was mostly concerned about food, the playground, and the gift shop. Every five minutes he was asking me about one of them. I definitely saw a part of myself in him that I am sorry to have passed on. I realized while watching him that I do the very thing I was getting frustrated with him for doing. He was so worried about when we would eat, shop, and play he couldn't enjoy where we were at the moment. We were at the ZOO for crying out loud, and he didn't even care to stop and see the animals. We're talking cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and monkeys! I have been so guilty lately of focusing so much on what's coming up in our schedule and what needs to be accomplished that I rarely take time to enjoy the moment I am in. It makes me sad to think about how many opportunities I have missed as a result of that attitude. When did everything I do become a means to and end, rather than just an experience?? I want to do better about that and hopefully in the process it will rub off on my poor little offspring.

Micah had a good time and showed more excitement about the animals. He's really just started noticing animals, so it was a perfect time to take him.

Tara had her first doctor's appointment and ultrasound today. We are praising God that she was told everything looked great and the baby looked just perfect. I even got to see a picture of the little peanut!

That's my boy!

We had a make up soccer game last night. Some of Noah's friends - Rhett, Paul, and Kathleen - came to watch and we went to kid's night at Chick-fil-A after the game. We had a great time and Noah did so well in his game. He played goalie, and I don't think he was scored on. He's scored 2 or 3 goals each game so far this season. He has really started getting into it and playing hard. We, ofcourse, would be the beaming proud parents on the sideline. He makes us proud in so many ways, soccer being only one of the more insignificant ones actually. Here a couple of clips of him in action!
